Start with nationality, current status, work plans, resources and family circumstances. A lawful entry route, a residence application and permission to work must fit together. A home purchase, a tax number or a pending application is not a universal solution.

| First question | Next step |
|---|---|
| Are you an EU/EEA citizen or covered family member? | Check the applicable free-movement registration or family framework. |
| Do you have a possible Greek citizenship claim? | Assess nationality history and registration; do not assume the claim already gives usable status. |
| Will you work for Greek or foreign employers/clients? | Assess employment, EU Blue Card or digital nomad rules as appropriate. |
| Will you live on independent resources without working in Greece? | Assess the FIP route and evidence of resources. |
| Are you joining family or making a qualifying investment? | Check the specific sponsor/family or investment category. |
Do not select a route only because its advertised income threshold or processing time looks attractive. The legal permissions must match what you will actually do in Greece. Greek Migration Code, Law 5038/2023 (Articles 68, 100 and 163); Migration amendments: Law 5275/2026.
A national visa is issued for an identified purpose and period. A residence card follows a separate application under the relevant category. An application receipt can evidence a pending procedure and particular rights, but it is not the same document as a visa or card.
Check whether the route requires a consular application abroad or permits filing from your existing lawful status. Do not assume every tourist can change category in Greece, or that a lawyer's power of attorney replaces personal appearance at a consulate.
List the nationality, age, relationship, current residence status and intended activities of each person moving. Different rules can apply to family members of a Greek citizen, another EU citizen or a non-EU permit holder.
A retiree living on a pension and an employee performing work from Greece for a foreign company may need different immigration treatment. Explain the actual activities, contracts and payment sources at the first assessment. Use the FIP service page for independent-resources planning and the residence-permit guide for route comparisons.
Immigration eligibility does not settle payroll, social security, business establishment or tax obligations. Arrange advice on those matters before moving the workplace or incorporating a company.
A valid Greek residence permit or long-stay visa generally permits short visits to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, subject to the applicable entry conditions. It does not give a general right to live or work in another EU country. Do not treat an application receipt as interchangeable with a residence card: departure, transit and re-entry need a document-specific check. European Commission: travel to another EU country with a residence permit.
Immigration permission, an AFM tax number and tax residence are separate questions. Greek tax residence can depend on a permanent or principal home, habitual abode or centre of vital interests, as well as the statutory presence test. Do not rely on a simple "less than 183 days per calendar year" rule. Check the relevant period, exceptions and any treaty with a tax adviser before moving. AADE: tax residence of natural persons.
Record entry dates, visa expiry, card expiry and any appointments or authority response deadlines. Keep time-zone differences in mind when arranging meetings; Athens uses EET/EEST, not a fixed UTC offset throughout the year.
An initial enquiry is not a grant of representation. Ask for the proposed scope, required documents, fees and third-party costs before work begins. Authority processing and a legal outcome cannot be guaranteed.
That can create avoidable risk. Check the lawful entry and application route before moving or committing to a long lease.
No. A tax number does not itself create immigration or employment rights.
No. Property ownership, investor residence and citizenship are different legal matters.
No. Some work can be delegated, but consular appointments, biometrics or other personal steps may still be required.

Request an initial 20-minute discovery call, or send a brief outline of your situation. The firm will confirm availability and the scope and fees for any further work. An enquiry does not create a lawyer-client relationship.
